Great guitars in the Great Hall

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Another music-packed weekend is coming up. Good luck trying to choose what to hear. You might want to consider the small-scale concert series with the big name - Music in the Great Hall. Located in a comfortable, very listener-friendly church, the series has been offering a wide range of chamber music for 29 seasons now.

The guitar duo of Julian Gray and Ronald Pearl will give two recitals there that sample the music of several centuries and styles, from Scarlatti to Debussy. As their recordings make plain, Gray and Pearl enjoy a tight musical partnership, notable for a combination of technical aplomb and sensitive interpretations.

The two met in 1982 at the Peabody Institute, where Gray had just graduated and Pearl was finishing up his studies. Gray soon joined the Peabody faculty, Pearl the Loyola College faculty. Since pooling their talents, the duo has enjoyed successful concert tours throughout the United States and Canada and made a splash in London, too.

The guitarists have also helped enrich the repertoire by commissioning new pieces and writing their own transcriptions of music originally written for other instruments.

Gray and Pearl will perform at 8 p.m. tomorrow and 3 p.m. Sunday at Towson Unitarian Universalist Church, 1710 Dulaney Valley Road. Tickets are $15, $6 for students. Call 410-813-4255.
