'Teddy Bears Picnic Concert'

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Kids: Bring your best teddy-bear pal to a "Teddy Bears Picnic Concert" Sunday at the Gordon Center for Performing Arts in Owings Mills. In honor of the teddy bear's 100th anniversary, kids' entertainer Gary Rosen will sing teddy-bear songs and more at the concert.

President Theodore Roosevelt gets the credit for starting the teddy-bear craze in 1902, after the editorial cartoon "Drawing the Line in Mississippi" appeared in the Washington Post. The cartoon, by Clifford Berryman, showed Roosevelt refusing to shoot a baby bear while on a hunting trip.

Almost immediately afterward, Morris and Rose Michtom of Brooklyn, N.Y., created a toy bear in honor of the president. They named it "Teddy's Bear."

Keep all that in mind as you enjoy the concert!

"Teddy Bears Picnic Concert" begins at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Gordon Center for Performing Arts, 3506 Gwynnbrook Ave., Owings Mills. $12; $8 children. Call 410-356-SHOW.
