Children's author Deborah Wiles likes to bring facts into her fiction, blending memories from her childhood with zany characters and fun story lines.
The Howard County Central Library invites kids and adults to meet Wiles tonight. The acclaimed writer lives in Frederick but grew up in Mississippi, which explains the Southern flair and quirky characters that make up her stories.
Wiles will be discussing her first novel, Love, Ruby Lavender, which is about a 9-year-old Mississippi girl and her relationship with her wacky grandmother. She will also talk about her award-winning book Freedom Summer, an account of an interracial friendship during the civil-rights movement.
"She's really quite a writer to create such different books," says librarian Susan Stonesifer.
Wiles will be open to any questions about her work. For example, an audience member might want to ask if the chickens in Love, Ruby Lavender really are based on her Southern relatives. Additionally, Wiles' books will be available for purchase and signing.
The event starts at 7 p.m., 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway. The program is open to all ages. Call 410-313-7880 to register.
