70,000 gallons of sewage spill into White Marsh Run

WHITE MARSH - Nearly 70,000 gallons of sewage spilled into White Marsh Run early yesterday after a power outage at the White Marsh pumping station in the 1200 block of Reames Road, county officials said.

The overflow began at 2:15 a.m., and county workers had the station working within 30 minutes.

County environmental officials have posted signs along White Marsh Run at Ebenezer and Bird River Grove roads warning people to avoid contact with the water.

Streetscape is complete on Loch Raven Boulevard

TOWSON - A $6.2 million streetscape project on Loch Raven Boulevard to improve traffic flow, pedestrian safety and the appearance of a busy commercial and residential district has been completed.

The project, which received $600,000 in funding from Baltimore County, runs from south of Joppa Road to beyond Taylor Avenue. It includes brick sidewalks, trees, landscaping and changes to ease traffic congestion. Improvements include pavement resurfacing, new drainage and repair and construction of curbs, gutters, sidewalks and sidewalk ramps.

"Like many of our older communities, this area has faced increasing challenges, and this project helps retain families and boost private investment," said County Executive C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger.

Agency offers $250 reward in arson that destroyed vans

TOWSON -Baltimore County Department of Aging is offering a $250 reward for information leading to a conviction in a suspected arson at Ateaze Senior Center in Dundalk.

Two Countyride vans operated by the department were destroyed by fire Nov. 6. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call department acting Director Arnold Eppel at 410-887-2108.

Police cable television show to feature anti-crime tips

TOWSON - The current edition of Police Report, the Baltimore County Police Department's cable television show, features steps that holiday shoppers can take to avoid crime.

A second segment will profile Precinct 12 in North Point and will feature Capt. Don Roby, precinct commander, and Officer Gladys Brown of the Community Outreach Team. The final segment will highlight neighborhood crime trends and ask viewers for help identify suspects.

The program runs through Dec. 6 and is aired four times a week on Comcast Channel 25: 8:30 p.m. Mondays; 7 p.m. Tuesdays; 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays.

Weeklong paper collection to focus on businesses

Baltimore's Department of Public Works will conduct a weeklong collection of recycled paper from businesses beginning Friday.

Businesses can call 410-396-5916 to schedule a pickup or obtain more information. The special collection runs through Nov. 22. Manila folders, phone books, copier paper and newspapers are among the eligible paper goods.

City officials saying they're doing this to celebrate "America Recycles Day." Residential customers are not eligible, but are encouraged to increase their recycling.

Plans for biotech park will be discussed at forum

The latest plans for a biotechnology research park and residential development north of the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus in East Baltimore will be presented at a free public forum at noon today at Hopkins' Downtown Center, Baltimore and Fayette streets.

Deputy Mayor Laurie Schwartz and project manager Davon Barbour are featured speakers at the forum, presented by the Baltimore Architecture Foundation.
