Athletes of the Week

THE BALTIMORE SUN

BOYS

Ben Pardew

Calvert Hall, soccer

The senior scored both goals in last weekend's 2-1 overtime victory over McDonogh, leading the No. 1 Cardinals to a 20-0-2 record and the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title. The rugged 5-foot-10, 175-pound striker finished the year with 15 goals -- eight of them game-winners -- and one assist.

Of the seven goals Calvert Hall has scored this season against McDonogh, six of them came from Pardew, a potent finisher. Pardew has 10 career assists and 29 career goals -- including five game-winners against McDonogh dating back to last fall's two regular-season victories.

As place-kicker on the Cardinals' third-ranked football team, Pardew has booted a 35-yard field goal and 31 extra points. In his best games, Pardew kicked all seven extra points in a 49-27 win over Woodberry Forest, and all eight in a 56-22 rout of Mount St. Joseph. GIRLS

Jess Naper

South Carroll, field hockey

The junior left wing, in her first varsity season, saved her best for the season's biggest game. Naper scored two goals in Friday's Class 3A state championship game against defending champion Fallston, including the game-winner in sudden-death double overtime for a 2-1 victory.

With the then-No. 1 Cougars dominating the second overtime, Naper and the Cavaliers made the most of a counter chance with 1:28 left before co-champions would have been declared. She took a centering pass from Alena Looserarian to give the No. 3 Cavaliers their second state title.

It wasn't the first time Naper, who finished with nine goals, scored a big goal or two. She scored twice in her first varsity game and had the goal in a 1-0 win over North Carroll.
