Frances R. Cheek, 92, school secretary

Frances R. Cheek, a retired elementary school secretary who enjoyed cooking and baking, died of undetermined causes Saturday at St. Agnes HealthCare. She was 92 and a longtime Catonsville resident.

Born Frances N. Radcliffe, she was raised in Ellicott City. After graduating from the old Ellicott City High School, she attended Union Memorial Hospital's former nursing school.

In 1931, she married Walter Marrow Cheek. Her husband, an insurance agent, died in 1958.

During World War II, she made radio crystals for Bendix Radio Corp. at a Charles Village facility. She later was employed as a secretary at Catonsville Elementary School for 20 years before retiring in 1978.

An excellent cook who was known for her broiled crab cakes and homemade rolls, Mrs. Cheek enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She also provided shelter and care for homeless animals.

Mrs. Cheek was a member of Catonsville Presbyterian Church, Frederick and Beechwood avenues, where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Her survivors include a son, Thomas R. Cheek of Catonsville; two daughters, Audrey J. Cheek of Reisterstown and Judith Anne Cheek of Catonsville; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
