On November 7, 2002, HOLLIS ROBERT Bob BROWN, SR., born May 4, 1920 in Baltimore, MD, to Hollis Romaine Brown and Lucy May Brown (nee Williams). He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha Lois Brown (nee Wineland), his son, Hollis Robert Brown, Jr., and daughter-in-law Gail Brown of Kingwood, TX, his son-in-law Richard Stare of York Springs, PA, and four grandchildren, Michael Christopher Brown, of Hopewell, NJ, Thomas Gregory Brown of Bryn Mawr, PA, Daniel Patrick Stare of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Diane Elizabeth Stare of Alexandria, VA. He is predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Rasin of Chestertown, MD, and his daughter, Susan Jane Stare of Mechanicsburg, PA. He was a graduate of Baltimore City College. He joined the Navy at the outbreak of World War II and was a Quarter Master aboard the U.S.S. Thurston. He made 32 crossings in the North Atlantic and his ship transported and landed troops as part of all the major North African and European invasions. Thereafter, his ship entered the war in the Pacific again transporting and landing troops at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Guadalcanal and else where. After the war he returned to Baltimore to operate his families business, The Capitol Trail Garage, which first opened in 1918, at the time only the second service station on Belair Road, and remained in business for over 65 years. Following his retirement Bob and Lois enjoyed many years of boating on the Chesapeake Bay aboard his boat The Kings Ransom. They were members of the Bush River Yacht Club and later Baltimore Yacht Club. He was most active in the Sue Island Power Squadron, and for years taught courses ranging from basic small boat handling to celestial navigation. Bob and Lois were long time residents of Northeast Baltimore and earlier this year moved to the Masonic Home of Maryland in Cockeysville.
