Johns Hopkins goalie Gary Kane Jr. made two saves in the penalty-kick round and Rob Morrison scored in the fifth round as the host Blue Jays advanced to the Division III NCAA tournament, 1-1 (4-3 in penalty kicks), over Franklin & Marshall yesterday in the Centennial Conference men's soccer championship game.
The Blue Jays (15-2-2) will be making their sixth appearance in the NCAA tournament in the past nine years. The Diplomats finished 8-9-2.
Women's soccer
Johns Hopkins 3, Gettysburg 0: Freshman Meg McIntosh scored twice and freshman Brenda Bzdak added a goal as the Blue Jays won the Centennial Conference title in Allentown, Pa., and earned a berth in the NCAA tournament.
The conference title marks Hopkins' third and the first since 1997. The Blue Jays will be making their third appearance in the NCAA tournament and first since the 1998 season.
Field hockey
McDaniel 1, Johns Hopkins 0: Susan Rohrer (Sherwood) scored the game-winner with 24:47 left off an assist from Kim Camponelli to lift the host Green Terror (18-3) to its first Centennial Conference championship in Westminster.
Camponelli had nine assists for the season, a school record.
Johns Hopkins goalie Missi Schafhauser had nine saves yesterday to keep the Blue Jays in the game, and Ashlee Duncan (Easton) came up with a defensive save in the first half to keep the game scoreless.
After facing no shots in the first half, McDaniel goalie Becky Arnold(Francis Scott Key) recorded five saves in the second half to preserve her eighth shutout of the season.
Johns Hopkins fell to 12-9.
Wake Forest 4, Maryland 0: The third-ranked Demon Deacons (16-2) captured the first ACC field hockey title in school history after shutting down the No. 4 Terps (16-4) in the conference championship game in Durham, N.C.
Wake Forest withstood an early Maryland penalty corner and held the Terps to two shots in the first half. Wake Forest made the most of its lone corner opportunity when senior Heather Aughinbaugh slid the ball to Kelly Dostal, who slapped it into the left corner of the cage at 31:41.
Aughinbaugh scored two goals in the second period, and Dostal added another goal for Wake Forest.
Maryland's Izzy Palmer and Colleen Barbieri received all-tournament honors.
