Francis Scott Key pupils to send names into orbit
Pupils from Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle School hope to have their names among the stars today.
The space shuttle Endeavour, scheduled for launch today on a trip to the International Space Station, will be carrying pupil signatures from more than 500 schools in the United States, Canada and eight other countries. Francis Scott Key was the only Baltimore school chosen to participate.
The pupils signed posters as part of Student Signatures in Space, an educational program that allows elementary and middle school children the opportunity to send their digitized signatures into space and to feel a personal involvement with the mission.
Veterans to be honored at ceremony this morning
A Veterans Day ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the War Memorial Building in downtown Baltimore.
Sponsored by the Veterans Affairs Maryland Health Care System and the Baltimore Armistice Committee, the event will feature Col. Orville Hughes, a retired Army veteran who served during World War II and the Korean War, as guest speaker.
At 11 a.m., a memorial wreath will be presented and a ship's bell will be tolled to mark the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I -- and to pay tribute to Maryland's veterans. A reception will be held after the ceremony. Information: 410-605- 7101.
Greenmount West residents plan neighborhood cleanup
Residents of the Greenmount West neighborhood, an 11-block area from North Avenue to Oliver Street and North Calvert Street to Greenmount Avenue, will clean up their community from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Members of Greenmount West have formed a partnership with Greater Homewood Community Corp. and the National Civilian Community Corps of Perry Point to organize the cleanup. It begins with orientation at 8 a.m. at Second Missionary Baptist Church, 214 E. Lanvale St. Lunch will be provided for participants.

Essex motorist hits horse, killing both
ESSEX -- A 64-year-old Essex man died yesterday in Montgomery County after his car ran into a horse on Frederick Road, authorities reported.
Mbainyeya Nwobegono of the 900 block of Punjab Circle was driving a 1996 Dodge Stratus south on Frederick Road in Clarksburg about 1 a.m. when it struck the horse, crossed into the northbound lanes and stopped in a wooded area, police said.
Both Nwobegono and the horse died. Police asked anyone with information about the accident or the owner of the horse to call 301-840-2435.
Perry Hall man held in shooting of his wife
PERRY HALL -- A 26-year- old man was in jail yesterday, charged with first-degree assault and a handgun offense in connection with a shooting Saturday that seriously wounded his wife at their Perry Hall home, county police said.
Roger Bagley, 26, was packing to move out of the home in the first block of Chapel Towne Circle, and was struggling with his wife over a gun that she did not want him to take when the weapon discharged, wounding her in the torso, police said.
The wife, Laticia Bagley, 26, was reported in serious condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The husband was being held on $350,000 bond, police said.
Public hearing Wednesday on rubble landfill expansion
TOWSON --Baltimore County Department of Public Works will hold a public hearing Wednesday on the proposed expansion of a Perry Hall rubble landfill.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. with a half-hour public information session, followed by a formal hearing. The meeting will be held in Room 106 of the County Office Building, 111 W. Chesapeake Ave.
