WEST OCEAN CITY -- A couple whose sport utility vehicle struck a telephone pole and a tree early Saturday remained in critical condition yesterday at hospitals in Baltimore, authorities reported.

Lisa Hevner Bentz, 31, was driving a 1991 Chevrolet Blazer west on Old Bridge Road in West Ocean City about 2:40 a.m. when it hit a tree stump, became airborne, then hit the pole and the tree.

Bentz was in critical but stable condition yesterday at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Her husband, Jeffrey Alan Bentz, 32, was in critical condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
