School board to hold meeting Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The Carroll County Board of Education will hold its monthly meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Room 007 of the board offices, 125 N. Court St., Westminster.
The agenda will be posted on the school system's Web site, www.carr.lib.md.us/ccps.
The meeting will be broadcast live on CETV, Channel 21 on Adelphia cable TV. It will be rebroadcast at 8 p.m. Thursday and Nov. 21; at 9 a.m. Saturday; and 8 p.m. Nov. 17.

Public schools' bus system wins magazine's acclaim
The Carroll County public school system's transportation department has been named a Great Fleet by School Bus Fleet, a national trade magazine that covers the school transportation industry.
The transportation department was profiled in School Bus Fleet's October issue as part of "Great Fleets Across America," an annual report on 50 exemplary school bus fleets. The magazine recognizes one fleet from each state for excellence in safety, maintenance, driver training and innovation.
Carroll schools' transportation department carries 26,202 students to 40 schools in the county and 16 special-education schools outside the county. The fleet's 364 buses travel 6 million miles a year.

Literacy Council offers Entertainment Books
The Literacy Council of Carroll County is selling Entertainment Books 2003 as a fund-raiser for literacy programs for adults.
Books cost $25 each and include savings coupons for restaurants, movies, lodging, travel and more.
Books are available at Rexall Drugs on West Main Street in Westminster; Washington Heights Pharmacy; Book & Card; Diane's Hallmark in Taneytown; and Village Pharmacy at Carroll Lutheran Village.

Guidance supervisor receives McDaniel honor
Barbara Guthrie, supervisor of guidance for Carroll County public schools, has received the Joseph R. Bailer Award from McDaniel College.
The Bailer Award is given annually to a graduate of the college's master's program who has made a significant contribution in education.
Guthrie has been supervisor of guidance since 1999, overseeing 86 counselors, crisis intervention specialists and behavior support specialists.
She also is chairwoman of the Character Education Steering Committee for the county and is facilitator for the county Character Education/Discipline Committee meetings.
Guthrie coordinates school and regional crisis teams, provides staff development opportunities, and handles the guidance budget for the county.
Guthrie was a pupil personnel worker 1987 to 1999, a guidance counselor at North Carroll High School 1978 to 1987 and a coordinator of the Career Education Project for the Educationally Handicapped 1975 to 1978.
