'Gentleman Robber' to hold seminar at community college
Carroll Community College will hold a seminar, "Robbery: What Financial Services Employees Need to Know," from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The presentation will feature Joe Schapiro, once known as "The Gentleman Robber."
Tellers, customer service representatives, branch managers, security officers, human resources personnel, senior officers, and law enforcement personnel will learn about the motives behind robberies; what's going through a robber's mind during a robbery; security awareness; what to do before, during and after a robbery; ways to identify and provide an accurate physical description of a robber; and what happens after a robbery.
Schapiro was arrested by the FBI on Feb. 4, 1969, and charged with 18 counts of armed robbery. He pleaded guilty and spent nearly a decade in federal prison.
He has since dedicated himself to helping financial institutions prevent the sort of crime he once committed. For more than two decades, Schapiro has drawn on his own experience and that of other bank robbers to offer a rare insight into the criminal mind.
