In a rematch of last year's Capital Athletic Conference men's soccer championship, which was decided in a shootout, Salisbury and Mary Washington again battled through scoreless regulation and overtime periods before settling things with penalty kicks.
This time, the Sea Gulls (14-2-2) celebrated the championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament when Dan Lader converted his kick to give Salisbury a 4-2 shootout win in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles, last year's CAC champs, ended their season 13-3-3.
Johns Hopkins 0, Muhlenberg 0 (Hopkins wins shootout, 6-5): Senior Matt Weill scored in the eighth round of penalty kicks and sophomore goalie Gary Kane Jr. deflected a shot by freshman Matt Pitetti off the crossbar as the host Blue Jays (15-2-1) eliminated the Mules (13-7-1) in the Centennial Conference tournament.
The Blue Jays will play Franklin & Marshall in the final at 1 p.m. today at Homewood Field.
Women's soccer
Mary Washington 1, Salisbury 0: Junior Joeann Walker scored 9:57 into the game to give the Eagles (15-4-1) the victory over the host Sea Gulls (12-7) in the Capital Athletic Conference championship game and an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
Johns Hopkins 2, Franklin & Marshall 1: Senior Jill Minger and sophomore Kathleen Turley scored to lead the Blue Jays (13-5-2) over the Diplomats (13-3-2) in the Centennial Conference semifinals yesterday in Allentown, Pa.
Hopkins will play Gettysburg, which upset top-seeded Muhlenberg in the other semifinal, at 1 p.m. today.
Field hockey
Salisbury 6, Mary Washington 1: The top-seeded Sea Gulls (15-2) scored six goals in the second half, three by senior Jess Manzone, to beat the visiting and second-seeded Eagles (14-4) in the CAC championship game and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Johns Hopkins 3, Washington College 2: Jenny Farrelly scored the game-winning goal with less than seven minutes remaining on a penalty stroke as the Blue Jays (12-8) defeated the Shorewomen (10-8) in a Centennial Conference semifinal at McDaniel College.
The Blue Jays will play at McDaniel at noon today in the championship.
