Century continues climb with win

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Century's Cinderella season continued last night.

Kelly Kasper, Megan Mills and Lauren Schwarzmann each scored first-half goals for No. 12 Century, and the visiting Knights then held on for a 3-2 girls soccer victory over Middletown in the Class 2A West region.

Century (13-1) advances to the Class 2A state semifinal Monday night against the winner of the East region final between Stephen Decatur and J.M. Bennett. The Knights are in their first year of varsity competition and don't have any seniors on their roster.

The Knights quickly took the momentum with the three first-half goals. Kasper got the first one about five minutes into the game, scoring off an assist from Mandy Psenicska on a re-start play from about 10 yards out.

Century made it 2-0 midway through the half on Mills' goal. Psenicska started things again by curling a perfect pass into the box for which Mills leaped and headed into the goal.

"We wanted to start off really strong, pass the ball well and play our game," Century coach Vanessa Ozimek said. "I didn't expect [the goals] to come so soon, but they were well-deserved."

Schwarzmann stunned Middletown one more time by scoring with about 12 minutes left in the half, putting the ball into the net after a scramble in front and near the end line. Century then seemed in good shape with the 3-0 halftime lead.

"It definitely got us pumped up," Ozimek said. "But they came back at us, and they came back at us strongly."

The Frederick County school did just that, scoring with 27 minutes left and again with 12 minutes remaining, slicing Century's lead to 3-2. However, Century goalie Chloe Nichols came up big in the second half.

She made several clutch saves, finishing with nine stops overall and helping the Knights hang on for the victory. Ozimek also credited Psenicska and Alicia Burkhart with strong efforts on defense to help Nichols and keep Century in front.

Century's biggest problem after this season might be what to do for an encore. The Knights have won the Carroll County and region titles and made the state final four - all without seniors.

"I didn't really know what to expect going into the season," Ozimek said. "We didn't really go into it with any goals set. We just wanted to play soccer."

Now, they'll get to play it a little longer.
