Severna Park girls stun River Hill in overtime, 2-1

Sophomore Melissa Loureiro's goal with 2:34 to play in the second 10-minute overtime period gave seventh-ranked Severna Park a 2-1 upset of top-ranked and previously unbeaten River Hill last night in the Class 3A East region girls soccer championship at Howard.

Severna Park (14-1-2) will play Walter Johnson, a 2-0 winner over Urbana, in Monday's state semifinals.

River Hill's loss ended its quest for an undefeated season and a fourth straight state title. The Hawks (15-1) were ranked fourth nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas poll.

In other girls region finals:

No. 10 Eastern Tech 3, Towson 2 (OT): Nicole Herrman scored off a pass from Erika Stimmel 1:15 into overtime to lift visiting Eastern Tech in the Class 2A North region. Eastern Tech led 2-0 at the half on a pair of direct kicks by Britney Thomas, one in the first minute of play. Towson tied the game on goals Katie Salamone and Maureen Hohn.

Bel Air 3, Franklin 2 (OT): Bethany Peck corralled a loose ball in front of the net with 2:02 left in the first overtime and hammered it home for the winner in the Class 3A North region championship at Bel Air.

Franklin built a 2-0 lead on goals by Ashley Harris and Sara McCallam in the first 12 minutes. Bel Air tied the game on goals by Michelle Peck and Brittany Rothenbach.

Sparrows Point 3, Rising Sun 1: Jenn Corkran scored midway through the second half and Courtney Speca had two goals as Sparrows Point earned the Class 1A North title.

Boys

Perry Hall 4, Parkville 3 (OT): Steve Pierra scored all four of his team's goals, including the winner in the second overtime, as host Perry Hall won the Class 4A North region title.

Parkville battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the second half to tie the game despite losing starting goalkeeper Chris Mattern 15 minutes into the game after he was given a red card. Parkville played a man down for the rest of the contest.
