Offensive MVP: Running back Jamal Lewis
Defensive MVP: Linebacker Ray Lewis
Biggest surprise, offense: Fullback Alan Ricard
Biggest surprise, defense: Linebacker Ed Hartwell
Run offense (19th in NFL): The Ravens have had mixed results with their running game. Running back Jamal Lewis is averaging 80.8 yards a game just a year removed from reconstructive knee surgery. The lead blocking of fullback Alan Ricard has been a pleasant surprise. The Ravens have relied on trickery at times, gaining 96 yards on 12 reverses to receivers and tight end Todd Heap. The offensive line has been solid most games, and the left side of Jonathan Ogden and Edwin Mulitalo can be dominant at times.
Pass offense (28th): In Chris Redman's six games at quarterback, the Ravens averaged 172 yards passing, producing seven touchdowns and three interceptions. In Jeff Blake's two games, the Ravens averaged 263 yards passing, totaling two touchdowns and four interceptions. Receiver Travis Taylor has emerged as a playmaker with Blake, and Heap has become Redman's favorite downfield target. Pass protection has been adequate, giving up 18 sacks.
Run defense (12th): The Ravens have held their own against Indianapolis' Edgerrin James, Denver's Clinton Portis, Cleveland's Jamel White and Pittsburgh's Amos Zereoue. Without linebacker Ray Lewis, the defense has been slow in pursuit at times, but linebackers Ed Hartwell and Bernardo Harris have picked up the slack. The Ravens are giving up 105.1 yards rushing a game and have allowed just one running back - Jacksonville's Fred Taylor - to crack 100 yards.
Pass defense (18th): The Ravens' young secondary - which has three first-year starters - continues to develop. The Ravens are giving up 222.1 yards passing a game and need to lower the 64.2 percent completion rate. After not coming up with a turnover in the first two games, the Ravens have made 13 interceptions in the past six games. Linebacker Peter Boulware has provided the most consistent rush with four sacks, and Michael McCrary leads the team with seven quarterback hits despite missing three games with a knee injury.
Special teams: The Ravens have lost the field-position battle often because of fumbles, penalties and poor pursuit angles. But this young group likely will improve in the second half. Kicker Matt Stover has converted 11 of 13 field-goal attempts, including all seven from inside 40 yards. Punter Dave Zastudil has averaged 41.4 yards and has placed 16 of 44 punts inside the 20-yard line.
