Field Hockey State Finals at Goucher College

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Today

Class 3A

No. 1 Fallston (16-1)

vs. No. 11 South Carroll (14-0-1)

Time: 2:45 p.m.

Outlook: The Cougars are looking for their 10th state crown against South Carroll, which has three state titles but has not been to the final four since 1992. For Fallston, the Harford County champs, Shea Abbott, Brandi Burdych, Lisa Shockley, Allison Stankis and rotating goalies Siobhan Eustace and Maddie Goetz have posted 11 shutouts and did not allow a goal to a county foe. The Central Maryland Conference champion Cavaliers may have speed on their side, led by midfielder Liz Fries, the top scorer with 13 goals and seven assists. They don't give up many goals either, posting 10 shutouts behind goalie Abby Treworgy, who has saved all four penalty strokes she has faced this season.

Tomorrow

Class 4A

Westminster (8-5-2)

vs. Broadneck (11-4-1)

When: 10:30 a.m.

Outlook: In a showdown of two teams that have lived by the shootout, Westminster is driving for an outright title after sharing the crown with Quince Orchard last season while the Bruins go for their first title since 1986. Thanks to goalie Lindsay Leese, the Owls slipped by Walt Whitman in a state semifinal shootout after being outshot 28-1. Broadneck and goalie Lisa Scarborough outlasted two teams they had lost to during the regular season - Chesapeake-AA and South River - in regional playoff shootouts. The Owls, who scored 29 goals this season, rely on their defense while the Bruins have scored 46 goals, paced by Rachel Bruce (11 goals, 2 assists) and Maria Depont (7, 5).

Class 2A

No. 2 Towson (16-1)

vs. Bethesda-Chevy Chase (11-1-2)

When: 12:30 p.m.

Outlook: The Generals slipped past No. 15 Centennial in a shootout and will now try to end the reign of one of the most successful programs in state field hockey history. The Barons, who tied Hereford for the 2A crown last season, go after a 12th championship and have won or shared a state record eight straight titles. Towson has relied on the defense of Hayley Mershon, Alley Firey, Sam Merrick and goalie Jessy Willse to allow just four goals while Jocelyn Paul leads an attack that has scored 54 goals. The Barons, ranked No. 2 in The Washington Post, have allowed just six goals, backed by keeper Elizabeth Schlossberg. Katie Lee leads a balanced attack.

Class 1A

Rising Sun (11-2)

vs. Poolesville (11-1)

When: 2:30 p.m.

Outlook: Poolesville dethroned defending champ Pocomoke in the semifinals and will go for its first state title against the Tigers, the 2000 1A champs.
