BOYS
Brian Carneal
Northeast, golf
The senior entered last weekend's state tournament at the Clustered Spires course in Frederick with the intent of earning something that had eluded him a year earlier, and the polished player accomplished what he set out to do.
Not only did Carneal win the tournament crown, but he defeated two opponents who had edged him when he was runner-up in the Anne Arundel County and district events. Carneal shot a 4-under-par 68 in last weekend's state golf championships, the lowest competitive score of his career, according to his coach, Brant Shanberger.
Carneal was runner-up in the state tournament a year earlier when it was held at the University of Maryland. And in last weekend's event, the Pasadena resident continued the consistency he established during county play, in which he led the league with the lowest scoring average at even par.
GIRLS
Stephanie Connelly
Northeast, golf
The talented sophomore won her second consecutive state crown at Clustered Spires in Frederick last Monday.
Starting the one-day tournament on the 10th hole, Connelly saved par out of bunkers on both the 17th and 18th holes and then birdied the par-4 first hole to take charge. She went on to shoot a 2-over 74 to win by two strokes.
In late September, Connelly, 15, represented the United States in Junior Ryder Cup play in Straffan, Ireland - one of 12 junior golfers in the country. She was the top qualifier from her 13- to 15-year-old age group, with four Junior PGA Tour wins over the past two years.
Last month, she also won her second consecutive Anne Arundel County individual championship.
