Couple honored for philanthropy in Anne Arundel

The annual Anne Arundel County Outstanding Philanthropist Award was presented to Creston and Betty Jane Tate.

As owners of car dealerships in Glen Burnie, Annapolis and Frederick, the Tates have been active in the Anne Arundel County business community for more than 40 years. The award is presented to a "person whose exceptional generosity demonstrates outstanding responsibility, and who encourages others in the community to give."

An awards luncheon to celebrate philanthropy in the county is scheduled for Nov. 21 at Radisson Annapolis Hotel. A reception begins at 11:30 a.m., with lunch at noon.

The event is presented by Community Counseling Service Co., in partnership with the Chesapeake Community Foundation and the Maryland Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

The Tates were nominated by the North Arundel Hospital Foundation, with a supporting nomination from Hospice of the Chesapeake. In 1997, they made a $1 million pledge toward North Arundel Hospital Foundation's campaign for a new emergency department. The Betty Jane and Creston G. Tate Emergency Department is now the second-busiest in Maryland, with more than 77,000 patients treated annually.

The foundation also is raising money to build a cancer center. The Tates have pledged $1.5 million to the project.

The couple has given to many organizations, including more than $300,000 to Hospice of the Chesapeake; an endowed scholarship of more than $25,000 to Anne Arundel Community College; and gifts to the Glen Burnie High School Beautification Project; Boy Scouts of Central Maryland; and youth athletic leagues.
