THE BALTIMORE SUN

The Rev. Henry Simon, a Cherry Hill pastor and retired federal employee, died Oct. 30 at his Northwood home of injuries suffered in an automobile collision Oct. 22 at Loch Raven Boulevard and Woodbourne Avenue. He was 66.

Born in Darlington, S.C., he moved to Baltimore as a child. A 1954 Dunbar High School graduate, he attended the Maryland School of Religion from 1969 to 1971 and earned a theology degree from Virginia Seminary in Lynchburg, Va., in 1976. He was awarded an honorary doctorate.

Before his retirement many years ago, he was a federal employee at Fort Meade. Family members said the nature of his work was classified.

Ordained in 1972, he was installed as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Cherry Hill in 1974 and remained in that position until his death. He preached his last sermon there two days before the accident. Funeral services were held at the church Monday.

He was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Baltimore Ministers Conference, Woodson Elementary School advisory council and Harbor Hospital Center's pastoral care staff. He was recording secretary of the United Baptist Missionary Convention of Maryland and a former president of the Baptist Pastors' Conference of Baltimore and Vicinity.

He served on many boards, including the Maryland Baptist Center and School of Religion.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, the former Janie Dewitt; a son, the Rev. Henry Simon Jr.; three daughters, Celestine Partlow, Clementine Simon and Carolyn Frazier, all of Baltimore; a stepson, Sylvester Dewitt of Durham, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
