Smith enlists aid of Navy midshipmen for tutoring program

Schools Superintendent Eric J. Smith has enlisted Navy midshipmen to help him reach his goal of higher academic achievement, beginning with Annapolis schools.

The "Mids for Kids" tutoring program, which was created a decade ago by the Naval Academy, will be expanded under a new partnership between the academy and Anne Arundel County public schools.

Under the agreement, the school system will take over coordinating the volunteers and providing transportation for midshipmen. Midshipmen will be asked to focus on core academic subjects such as reading, math and science, rather than on activities such as sports or art, which previously were included.

Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Richard J. Naughton will join Smith and U.S. Education Undersecretary Gene Hickok to sign the agreement at a ceremony Thursday at Germantown Elementary School.

Glen Burnie man charged in attack on his girlfriend

A 37-year-old Glen Burnie man accused of striking his girlfriend with a hammer and stabbing her Saturday was arrested in Baltimore yesterday, Anne Arundel County police said.

James Thomas Nick Jr. was returned to Anne Arundel County about 5 p.m. He is charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and auto theft.

Baltimore police arrested him after a traffic stop in the city, said Officer Charles Ravenell, an Anne Arundel County police spokesman.

He was driving a blue 1999 Suzuki, which he is accused of stealing from his girlfriend after the attack, police said.

Gwendlyn I. Johnson, 38, of the 7400 block of Furnace Branch Road in Glen Burnie suffered multiple scalp cuts, bruises and a stab wound to her abdomen but was able to give a statement to police when they arrived. Johnson's mother witnessed the attack, police said.

Police identify driver killed on Crain Highway

County police released yesterday the name of the driver killed Saturday when his mo-ped was struck by a Ford truck on Crain Highway.

Dwayne Allen Scarlett, 32, of First Street in Glen Burnie was thrown from the mo-ped onto the hood of a 1988 Ford F150, which was turning left onto Furnace Branch Road from the southbound lane of Crain Highway, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gail M. Lycett, 41, also of First Street in Glen Burnie, was a passenger on the mo-ped and suffered head and chest injuries. She was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said. Lycett was in critical condition yesterday evening at University of Maryland Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Neither the driver of the Ford, Ryan A. Long, 17, of the 900 block of Hammonds Lane in Brooklyn Park, nor his infant passenger was injured in the accident, police said. The cause of the crash is under investigation, and no charges had been filed as of yesterday, police said.
