Brashaad Mayweather raced 8 yards for a touchdown in overtime, lifting host Old Mill to a thrilling 20-14 upset of No. 4 Annapolis last night in Millersville.
In beating the Panthers (8-1) for the third straight year, the Patriots (7-2) kept alive their bid for a fourth consecutive Class 4A East football playoff berth.
After junior defensive back Kevin Barnes returned an interception 102 yards in the first half to give Old Mill its first touchdown, Tyler Young brought the Patriots back in the waning minutes of regulation. The quarterback capped an 80-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run that tied the score at 14-14 with 1:48 remaining.
Annapolis came into the game, postponed from Friday because of poor conditions at Bob Golliday Memorial Field, with their sixth straight postseason appearance secure as the leader of the 3A East region.
"We knew we had our backs against the wall because this was our season," Young said. "We had to do it."
Mayweather, the metro area's second-leading rusher, ran for 94 yards on 22 carries to give him 1,616 yards for the season. He scored his 20th touchdown of the season on second down in overtime.
Mayweather got the opportunity after Annapolis failed to score from the 10 on the first overtime possession.
"Everybody was making big plays, and we just ran it up the gut," said Mayweather, who failed to rush for a 100 yards for the first time this season. "Our defense kept us in the game and big players make big plays in big games and that's what happened."
It took a huge play by Barnes for Old Mill to tie the score at the half, after Annapolis had dominated the first 24 minutes but had only one score to show for it.
The Panthers rolled 61 yards in nine plays on the opening drive. Demario Harris reached the end zone on a 24-yard run.
In the first half, Annapolis ran 37 plays compared with 13 for Old Mill and had 168 yards rushing to Old Mill's 19. The Patriots had the football for less than six minutes in the first half, but Barnes' scintillating interception return with 6:39 before intermission tied the score.
The Panthers were setting up fourth-and-goal at the Patriots' 6, the 18th play of a drive that started in the first quarter at their own 20. Quarterback Larry Beavers lofted a pass toward the right corner of the end zone.
"The ball was tipped and it was just sitting there, and I had to go get it, oh man," Barnes said. "I saw the open field and kept going."
Annapolis took a 14-7 lead with 9:50 left in the game on a 12-yard burst by Demario Green, who carried 20 times for 85 yards. Green's score was set up by sophomore Kevin Hopkins' interception at the Old Mill 28.
Old Mill got the ball back on the kickoff at the 20 with 9:41 left, and Young took the team down the field.
