No. 9 South River rallies to topple Frederick, 4-2

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Trailing by a goal on two occasions didn't phase No. 9 South River as the host Seahawks defeated Frederick, 4-2, in a Class 4A East region semifinal boys soccer game yesterday. The Seahawks will meet the Thomas Johnson/Old Mill winner Thursday for a trip to next week's state tournament.

Senior co-captain Tom Shelly got the Seahawks (12-3-2) even for a second time at 2-2 early in the second half. Ryan Cullers then finished a chance midway through for the game-winner. Zack Wordell added an insurance goal with 12 minutes left.

"It was a good one," said South River coach Greg Carroll. "Frederick had a nice team with two really good strikers that gave our defense some trouble."

No. 8 Old Mill 2, Thomas Johnson 1: The visiting Patriots (13-2-2) got first-half goals from juniors Chris Moran and Daniel Bulls and goalie Tim Carrier did the rest, as Old Mill advances to the regional final, where they will play South River for the third time this season.

Class 3A East

No. 15 Mt. Hebron 2, Northeast-AA 1: Sophomore Robbie Carper fed senior Joe Damiano for the tying goal in the first half, then assisted junior Sevi Sinanian's game-winner with 20 minutes left, lifting the host Vikings (11-6) over the Eagles and into the regional final against Howard County rival River Hill.
