Homes for America receives award for development
Homes for America, a nonprofit housing development organization based in Annapolis, was honored recently as the Developer of the Year by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. The group was one of five to receive a Commitment to Excellence Award.
Homes for America develops affordable housing for people with special needs, focusing on Section 8 subsidies in designated Smart Growth areas. Its mission is to provide affordable housing and related social services to low- and moderate-income residents and the elderly.
Chamber of Commerce offers NationJob Network

Severn school announces buy-a-brick fund raiser
Severn Elementary School is in the last phase of a refurbishment program. The school is asking area businesses to buy a brick to support the relocation of the school's flagpole to the front of the school.

SCORE workshops offered for small-business owners
Service Corps of Retired Executives has scheduled three small-business workshops to be offered at the YWCA, 1517 Ritchie Highway in Arnold.
Topics include "How to Start and Manage Your Own Business" on Nov. 19, "Small Business Accounting" on Dec. 4 and "Let's Prepare a Business Plan" on Dec. 10. The cost of each workshop is $45. Registration is recommended.
SCORE workshops are for owners of small businesses and those who plan to launch a business venture. Workshops begin at 8:45 a.m. and run through 2 p.m. (except "How to Start and Manage Your Own Business," which will run until 4 p.m.).

Donna Anderson of Linden Communications was recently elected to the board of directors of Workforce Organizations for Regional Collaborations, a nonprofit organization serving the Washington metropolitan area. WORC links employers, nonprofit groups and government agencies in an effort to find jobs for people in need.
