Teens from 2 high schools to help elderly residents

Plans are under way for two county high schools to undertake a service learning project with Partners in Care. North County High School Cleanup Days will take place this week. This will be the fifth year for North County students to take part in the project, during which 500 freshmen will perform yardwork and small exterior painting jobs for elderly clients of Partners in Care in the North County area.

Volunteers from Partners in Care and teachers from the school will be present at all sites. Arundel High School will participate in the project for the second time this year. Two hundred and fifty students each day will earn service learning credits on Nov. 12 and 13 by raking leaves and doing other yardwork for the elderly in the West County area. Harbour School releases study of its graduates

Harbour Schools at Annapolis and Baltimore have completed their sixth annual graduate study. Overall, 94 percent of Harbour graduates are employed, in post-secondary education, or attending vocational day training. Harbour serves a wide variety of disabilities and cognitive levels from gifted to moderately challenged.

Individuals with learning disabilities face challenges in completing their high school education and also in their transition from high school to a productive, independent adult life.

The Maryland State Department of Education reports that high school dropout rate of students with learning disabilities and or emotional problems is twice that of nondisabled students. Only two students have dropped out of the Harbour School program before completing high school.
