4 Howard men race for world duathlon title

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Four Howard County residents finished in the middle of their packs while representing the United States in their respective age groups at the International Triathlon Union's recent 2002 Duathlon World Championships in suburban Atlanta.

Duathlon is an event that combines running and cycling. The course in Alpharetta, Ga., about 22 miles north of Atlanta had a bike course of 40 kilometers (nearly 25 miles) and a running course of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Both courses were moderate to hilly.

Don Forgione of Ellicott City placed 13th in the men's 50-54 age group.

His son, Adam, a UMBC freshman, finished 18th in an elite youth group. The Forgiones also competed in last year's event, which was held in Italy.

Trey Cassidy, principal of Glenelg Country School, was 12th in the 30-34 age group.

John Elliott, also of Ellicott City, finished sixth in the 60-64 age group, fourth among Americans in that race.
