NFL WEEK 9

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Dallas (3-5) at Detroit (2-5)

Time: 1 p.m. today.

Line: Lions by 3.

Last meeting: Lions won, 15-10, at Detroit on Jan. 6.

Key stat: Cowboys have scored more than 17 points only once.

Worth watching: Rookie quarterbacks: Lions' Joey Harrington has won two of three at home; this is the first road test for the Cowboys' Chad Hutchinson.

Outlook: Harrington has provided the Lions with a spark, especially at Ford Field. He has a much stronger arm than his fellow rookie. Emmitt Smith, now the NFL's all-time leading rusher, is averaging 4.2 yards per carry. Lions' James Stewart is averaging 4.6.

New England (3-4) at Buffalo (5-3)

Time: 1 p.m. today.

Line: Bills by 3.

Last meeting: Patriots won, 12-9, at Buffalo on Dec. 16, 2001.

Key stat: Past five meetings have been decided by three points or fewer.

Worth watching: It's ex-Patriot Drew Bledsoe (NFL-high 2,500 yards passing) vs. Tom Brady (15 TD passes, nine interceptions).

Outlook: This is about as juicy a matchup as you'll find. Patriots had to do something with Bledsoe, but trading him to a team that he could make a contender was not part of the plan.

Tennessee (3-4) at Indianapolis (4-3)

Time: 1 p.m. today.

Line: Colts by 3.

Last meeting: Colts won, 45-21, at Indianapolis on Sept. 4, 1994.

Key stat: Titans have won three of past four vs. Colts.

Worth watching: Colts' Edgerrin James is struggling, averaging just 3.4 yards per rush. Titans' Eddie George is averaging only 3.3.

Outlook: Colts' passing game clicks indoors, where Marvin Harrison has 16 100-yard games in his past 21. Titans' defense, among the league's worst, won't be able to pressure Peyton Manning.

Cincinnati (0-7) at Houston (2-5)

Time: 1 p.m. today.

Line: Texans by 3.

Last meeting: First meeting.

Key stat: Bengals have scored more than seven points twice.

Worth watching: In his past three games, Texans' David Carr has completed 58.4 percent of his passes with three TD passes and no interceptions. Bengals' Jon Kitna has thrown three TD passes vs. seven interceptions.

Outlook: Expansion Texans face a new obstacle: overconfidence. They're favored for the first time ever. The Bengals have promised their fans a win today, but losers usually keep on losing.

Philadelphia (5-2) at Chicago (2-5)

Time: 1 p.m. today.

TV: Chs. 45, 5.

Line: Eagles by 6 1/2 .

Last meeting: Eagles won, 33-19, in NFC playoffs on Jan. 19 at Chicago.

Key stat: It's Bears' No. 26 offense vs. Eagles' No. 2 defense.

Worth watching: Bears' Marty Booker has 42 catches and ranks second in NFC with five receiving TDs. Donovan McNabb (12 TDs, four interceptions) goes for his third straight win over the Bears.

Outlook: Eagles, who have won five of six, are a methodical, complete team. The Bears are an injured, incomplete team. It could be a big day for McNabb and Duce Staley.

Minnesota (2-5) at Tampa Bay (6-2)

Time: 1 p.m. today.

Line: Buccaneers by 7.

Last meeting: Bucs won, 41-14, at Tampa Bay on Oct. 28, 2001.

Key stat: Bucs' defense hasn't allowed a TD in four of past five games.

Worth watching: Michael Pittman leads the Bucs in rushing (394 yards) and receptions (34). Vikings' Randy Moss leads NFC with 49 catches, three for TDs.

Outlook: Bucs have beaten their former NFC Central rival the past four years in Tampa. They're in different divisions now, but the story will be the same. Bucs have had trouble scoring, but Vikings' defense is among the NFL's worst.

Pittsburgh (4-3) at Cleveland (4-4)

Time: 1 p.m. today.

Line: Steelers by 3.

Last meeting: Steelers won, 16-13, in OT at Pittsburgh on Sept. 29.

Key stat: Steelers have scored at least 28 points in Tommy Maddox's four starts.

Worth watching: Tim Couch is having a modest season for Browns: seven TD passes vs. six interceptions. Steelers' Joey Porter leads NFL with four interceptions.

Outlook: The emergence of Maddox has given the Steelers a lift. The beat-up Browns defense will have trouble containing Hines Ward.

N.Y. Jets (2-5) at San Diego (6-1)

Time: 4:05 p.m. today.

Line: Chargers by 7 1/2 .

Last meeting: Chargers won, 21-6, at New York on Dec. 18, 1994.

Key stat: It's Chargers' No. 2 rushing offense vs. Jets' No. 31 rushing defense.

Worth watching: LaDainian Tomlinson is averaging a hefty 4.5 yards per carry. Jets' Curtis Martin is averaging 3.8.

Outlook: Chargers are within reach of their first 7-1 start since 1994, when they went to the Super Bowl. Their running game will be too much for the floundering Jets, who have lost five of six.

St. Louis (2-5) at Arizona (4-3)

Time: 4:15 p.m. today.

Line: Rams by 3.

Last meeting: Cardinals won, 20-17, at St. Louis on Sept. 27, 1998.

Key stat: Rams are 0-3 on the road.

Worth watching: Rams' Marc Bulger has thrown four TD passes vs. one interception in two starts. Cards' Jake Plummer has tossed only six TD passes vs. eight interceptions.

Outlook: Thanks to the emergence of Bulger, Rams think they still have an outside chance in the NFC West, where they trail 49ers by three games. Cardinals' legitimacy as contenders in question after last week's loss to 49ers. It'll be an even bigger question mark by tonight.

San Francisco (5-2) at Oakland (4-3)

Time: 4:15 p.m. today.

Line: Raiders by 3.

Last meeting: Raiders won, 34-28, in OT at San Francisco on Oct. 8, 2000.

Key stat: Raiders have lost three in a row by an average of 10.3 points.

Worth watching: Two of the NFL's top passers: 49ers' Jeff Garcia has 10-4 TD-interception ratio; Rich Gannon's is 15-7.

Outlook: A few weeks ago this matchup looked like a Super Bowl preview. Then injuries hit the Raiders. Now it's a nice neighborhood meeting, depriving Raiders of a big home-field advantage.

Jacksonville (3-4) at N.Y. Giants (3-4)

Time: 8:30 p.m. today.

TV: ESPN.

Line: Giants by 3.

Last meeting: Giants won, 28-25, at New York, on Dec. 23, 2000.

Key stat: Jaguars haven't scored more than 19 points during three-game losing streak.

Worth watching: Fred Taylor leads Jaguars with 681 yards rushing (4.4 avg.). Tiki Barber leads Giants with 444 yards rushing (3.9 avg.).

Outlook: After a promising start, Jaguars hit bottom with last week's loss to the Texans. And Giants' NFC East hopes are all but gone after the loss to the Eagles. In games like this, the home field counts.
