An Anne Arundel County grand jury indicted an Annapolis teen-ager yesterday on a charge of murder in a Sept. 19 fatal shooting and carjacking in the state capital's historic district.
Annapolis High School student Leeander Jerome Blake, 17, of the 1300 block of Tyler Ave. in the Robinwood public housing complex is accused of killing Straughan Lee Griffin, 51, a video projection company owner, during a failed armed robbery.
Prosecutors moved quickly to obtain an indictment, bypassing a preliminary hearing that could have been held within 15 days of Blake's bail hearing Monday. State's Attorney Frank R. Weathersbee said more indictments may be sought against the juvenile.
When arrested last weekend, Blake and his neighbor, Terrence Tolbert, 19, were charged with armed robbery, armed carjacking and weapons counts in a crime that stunned the community. The two were accused of the shooting, stealing Griffin's Jeep and running him over with it as they drove off.
Prosecutors said the teen-agers admitted they were involved in the crime, and charging documents say that Tolbert has alleged that Blake was the shooter.
Weathersbee said his office did not seek indictments against Tolbert yesterday because the investigation is continuing and because the grand jury is set to convene again before the end of a 30-day time period to schedule a preliminary hearing for the adult. Both teen-agers are jailed without bond.
