Glenelg's 15-game winning streak ends in West final vs. Bethesda-Chevy Chase

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Field hockey giant Bethesda-Chevy Chase demonstrated to 11th-ranked Glenelg why it has won a national-record eight straight state championships yesterday afternoon.

Junior forward Bethany Martin scored twice, senior midfielder Katie Lee had two assists and the host Gladiators managed three shots in a 3-0 defeat beneath a chilly rain in the Class 2A West regional final.

The loss ended Glenelg's 15-game unbeaten streak and gave B-CC its 16th straight regional title. The Barons (10-1-2) of Montgomery County will next play in the 2A state semifinals at 2:45 p.m. Monday at Goucher College, facing the winner of the East regional final between Easton and J.M. Bennett, which will be played at 3 p.m. today at J.M. Bennett.

"We needed to play our best game, and this wasn't our best game," said Glenelg sophomore goalie Alyson Blum, who made six saves. "We just weren't hungry enough for a goal. We knew they were going to be one of the best teams we played, but we obviously didn't know enough."

Glenelg (12-1-3) had outscored its opponents 44-5 going in, and B-CC narrowly escaped Century in Thursday's regional semifinal on penalty strokes. But Glenelg's hopes for an upset were dealt a blow less than three minutes in. Off a penalty corner, B-CC senior forward Courtney Lee fed Katie Lee at the top of the circle. Blum stopped Katie Lee's initial shot, but Martin beat the defense to the rebound and put the ball in an unguarded cage.

"They play all year round down there, not just during the season, and we're just starting to do that around here," said Glenelg coach Ginger Kincaid. "The kids that are playing a lot for us right now are young. Unless you play like they do, as much as they do, you're not going to come to this level. ... I hope our kids saw what it takes to get to that level."
