Buete, Terps bring down No. 6 Clemson

THE BALTIMORE SUN

COLLEGE PARK - Scott Buete's second goal of the season helped No. 7 Maryland defeat sixth-ranked Clemson, 1-0, last night at Ludwig Field.

After playing a scoreless first half in which the teams combined for 16 shots, the Terps (12-3-0, 4-1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) struck in the 86th minute when Clarence Goodson took a shot that hit the left post. Sumed Ibrahim gathered the rebound and fired it forward to a waiting Buete, who tapped it in. The game-winner was the junior midfielder's first goal since the Aug. 30 season opener.

Meanwhile, Clemson (10-2-2, 2-2-1 ACC) couldn't solve Terps goalkeeper Noah Palmer. The sophomore stopped six shots and improved to 11-3-0.

Maryland's 4-1 ACC start is its best since 1971, when it won the league crown. The Terps' win over Clemson was their first in their past four tries. The last time the Terps beat Clemson was a 2-1 win at Clemson on Oct. 30, 1999. Maryland's last win at Ludwig Field over the Tigers was 1-0 on Nov. 2, 1997.

Maryland next will play at 7 p.m. on Friday at Virginia.
