Quartet to open concert season

Candlelight Concerts will open its 2002-2003 season of chamber music with a performance by the Guarneri String Quartet at 8 p.m. Saturday in Howard Community College's Smith Theatre.

The quartet, resident at the University of Maryland, was formed in 1964 at the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont. The group has played in the Americas, Mexico, Europe, Asia and Australia, and been featured on television and radio specials and in documentaries.

Its members have been interviewed by Charles Kuralt on CBS's Sunday Morning and are the subject of a 1989 full-length film and several books.

The program will include Haydn's Quartet in C Major, Op. 54, No. 2; Quartet No. 3, Op. 43 by Viktor Ullman, a Czech composer who died in a Nazi concentration camp; and Beethoven's Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132.

Tickets are $28; $24 for senior citizens. Students pay $9.
