Researcher to present program on American eel

CHASE -- Researcher Wendy Morrison will discuss her studies into the American eel and its decline at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Marshy Point Nature Center, Dundee and Saltpeter Creeks Park on Eastern Avenue.

In the fall, eels leave streams and rivers for the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic, where they reproduce and are never seen again. Baby eels that hatch in the Sargasso Sea reappear a year later and repopulate the same streams and rivers.

An estimated $3 million worth of eels are caught in the bay each year. Many are shipped to Europe and Asia, where they are considered a delicacy. Information: 410-887-2817.
