Eight entered in Breeders' Cup event

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Eight horses, including the event's past two winners, are scheduled to jump for a $250,000 purse in today's Grade I Breeders' Cup Steeplechase, a 2 5/8 -mile affair with 17 fences at Far Hills, N.J.

Quel Senor, last year's winner for Far Hills-based Coppertree Farm, is winless in three jump starts this year although he took a training flat race Sept. 29. He is prepared in Monkton by Tom Voss, the runaway leader in the National Steeplechase Association trainer standings with 23 wins and $499,675 in earnings.

The 2000 Breeders' Cup champ, All Gong, finished third in the Legacy Chase at Shawan Downs in Cockeysville on Sept. 28, a race won by Maryland-based Tres Touche, also in today's field.

Tres Touche, trained at Fair Hill by Ricky Hendriks, is 2-for-2 over the Far Hills course. All Gong is conditioned nearby in Pennsylvania by Bruce Miller, also trainer of two other entries, Legacy runner-up Pelagos, and Turkish Corner, a former winner on the course.

Australian representative Zabenz is considered a threat, and 1998 steeplechase champion Flat Top and Double Leaf complete the lineup.

The race will be aired on ESPN2 at 5:30 p.m.
