Arundel sweeps Broadneck

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Fourth-ranked Arundel's hitting dominated No. 7 Broadneck in a three-game sweep yesterday that virtually assured the Wildcats a berth in the Anne Arundel County volleyball championship on Oct. 29 at Meade.

Arundel (10-0) ran its league record to 8-0 by scores of 15-5, 15-8 and 15-8 over the Bruins (8-3, 6-2). The top two teams will play for the county title, and Arundel, which knocked off No. 5 Severna Park, 3-2, on Monday, has only three games left.

Severna Park (7-4) is 6-1 in county action and did not play at Meade (7-2, 5-2) yesterday after the county changed 5:15 p.m. times to earlier starts with 6 p.m. curfews. The teams agreed to play instead at 4 p.m. today.

"We flat-out dominated," said Arundel coach Greg Leland. "Our kids scrambled like Broadneck normally does, and they couldn't hit with us. We took away the short ball, which is something we worked on for two weeks to get ready for them."

Sophomore Tiffany Johnson had nine kills and 12 blocks. Kristin Sann had five kills and eight blocks, and Dee Dee Matthews had 10 kills and was 14-for-15 from the line.

Setter Amanda Hernandez had 28 assists, three kills and 24 digs, and Alex McGuire was 13-for-13 serving with an ace, seven kills and 30 digs.
