Martin, John Sargent

MR. JOHN SARGENT MARTIN, age 86, of 619 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC, passed away Monday, October 14, 2002 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Mr. Martin was born in Mount Airy on September 20, 1916, to the late James Drury and Ruth Sargent Martin. Mr. Martin graduated from Hargrave Military Academy, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and later attended Sewanee Episcopal Seminary. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II in the 82nd Airborne Pathfinders. From 1951 to 1965, Mr. Martin served as a pastor for several Episcopal mission churches in Alaska, Oregon, California and Texas, and, then, worked as a social worker for the Maryland Welfare Department until his retirement. Mr. Martin was the grandson of John Davis Sargent, president and co-founder of North Carolina Granite Corporation, and he served as a member of the board of directors until his death. He was also a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne Eleanor and Nicholas Bolles of Lobelville, TN and Mary Kathleen and Jeff Porter of Nashville, NC; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles McCutcheon and Carol Martin of Racine, WI and John Sargent and Caryl Martin of Portland, OR and twelve grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by a brother James Drury Martin. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 19, 2002 at 10:00 A.M. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Mount Airy. The Service will be conducted by the Rev. Nelson B. Hodgkins. The family will receive friends on Saturday immediately following the Memorial Service at Trinity Episcopal Church.
