Terps get fifth oral commitment for '03

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The 2003 recruiting class for the Maryland men's basketball program appears complete, after a source close to the Terrapins' recruiting situation confirmed yesterday that the school had received an oral commitment from 6-foot-9 forward Ekene Ibekwe.

Ibekwe, who plays for Carson (Calif.) High, represents the fifth and final Maryland scholarship that has been accepted by next year's class. Ibekwe also was weighing going to Southern California or Kansas.

The Terps also had been heavily involved in recruiting 6-8 forward Terrence Roberts of St. Anthony's High (Jersey City, N.J.), who also is being pursued by Syracuse. Roberts visited Maryland last weekend.

Along with Ibekwe, the Terps have received oral commitments from 6-5 guard Michael Jones (Thayer Academy, Braintree, Mass.), 6-4 guard D.J. Strawberry (Mater Dei High, Santa Ana, Calif.), 6-10 center Hassan Fofana (Holy Name Central, Worcester, Mass.) and 7-foot center Will Bowers of nearby Archbishop Spalding.

Maryland is aiming to sign each of its recruits during the early one-week signing period that begins Nov. 13.
