Augusto Villanueva, world traveler and father of eight, died Saturday of congestive heart failure at Manor Care nursing home in Rossville. He was 87.

Born in Pallasca, Peru, he sailed to America in the 1930s and served in the Coast Guard during World War II. He was honored for bravery after his ship was hit by a torpedo near Normandy, France.

After being honorably discharged, Mr. Villanueva began a career as chief cook, with a specialty in pastries, aboard various merchant ships.

He traveled the world, visiting ports in Italy, Israel, Japan, Finland, South Africa and France.

He was married to Annikki Villanueva for 32 years, until their divorce in 1985.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Ursula Roman Catholic Church, 8801 Harford Road, Parkville.

Mr. Villanueva is survived by eight children, P. Maria Villanueva of Timonium, Norma V. Miller of Chicago, Jari Villanueva of Catonsville, Beatrice Mason and Carmen Nemic of Perry Hall, Taina Po of Fulshear, Texas, Paula Tribull of Gardenville and Daniel Villanueva of Rosedale; and 13 grandchildren.
