Robert L. Smith, 74, business owner

Robert L. Smith, a retired iron worker and business owner, died Tuesday of complications from a stroke at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. He was 74 and lived in Oliver Beach.

A member of Ironworkers Local 16, he helped build the Bay Bridge in the early 1950s. He founded his business, Bob's Overhead Door, an East Baltimore firm that installs loading-dock rolling doors. He retired in 1992. The business remains in family hands.

Known as Bob, he was born and raised in Hagerstown.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Stella Maris Chapel, Dulaney Valley Road, Timonium.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Marie Pressel; a son, Rob Smith Jr. of Abingdon; a daughter, Lisa Henninger of Hydes; a brother, Lester Smith of Hagerstown; three sisters, Anna Oden, Kittylee Godlove and Beverly Royce, all of Hagerstown; and two granddaughters.
