NEALE, Robert Randolph

On Friday, Sept. 20th, 2002 ROBERT RANDOLPH NEALE, World War II P. O. W and Twice Purple Heart Wounded died at home from lung cancer. A Baltimore real estate broker for 57 years, the long time Catonsville resident was 84. Born in Relay, the son of Grace and William Neale, Robert R. Neale graduated from Augusta Military Academy in 1936 at Ft. Defiance, Virginia. He then attended John Hopkins and the Maryland Art Institute. He married Alice Cook May 11, 1942, before being sent to Camp Croft, S. C. as an Army Lieutenant. His first assignment was the 5th Division Infantry to Iceland in 1942. After 9 months on glaciers, he entered combat days after D-Day, off Utah Beach, Normandy, France. He was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster, and was captured by the Germans. Europe was liberated in 1945 and he and other P. O. W. a s were sent home. In 1947 he opened his own real estate business, Butler and Neale on Edmondson Avenue, where he was one of the first real estate brokers to endorse and hire women as real estate agents. After his wife died in 1977, he turned the real estate business over to his son, Russell W. Neale, and remained semi-retired until this death. Mr. Neale maintained his beloved historic family home, b Bowlers b , built circa 1660, on the Rappahannock River at Bowler a s Wharf, Virginia for the past 50 years. He will be buried with military honors and a 21-gun salute at the b Bowler a s b cemetery that dates back to the civil war. He loved fishing, crabbing, cooking, boating and gardening, especially at b Bowler a s b , where he also loved working on the house and its 8 acres on the water. He is survived by his three sons:Robert R. Neale, Jr. and Richard J. Neale, both of Catonsville, and Russell W. Neale of Las Vegas, NV, two daughter in laws, eight grandchildren, Holly Barrett, Randy, Liz, Richie, Cindy, Kelly and Nicole Neale all of Baltimore, and Christy Neale of San Francisco, and his devoted companion of 25 years, Kay Kauffman.
