LEOPOLD SR. , JONATHAN P. A. On Sunday September 22, DR. JONATHAN PORTER AARON LEOPOLD, beloved husband of Anita Leopold (nee Callahan)devoted father of four children and three stepchildren; dear brother of David Francis Leopold and his former wife and the mother of his children Barbara Leopold; loving grandfather of 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Dr. Leopold died early Sunday morning with his loving wife Anita at his side in their home in Richmond, Virginia. He was born in Buffalo, N. Y. on April 19, 1926, the second son of Dr. Francis Leopold and Buffalo artist Jean Porter Leopold. He retired in 1996 after a distinguished career of more than 45 years as physician, public official and educator. Dr. Leopold was nationally recognized for his leadership in the development of community-based care for persons with mental illness and developmental disabilities. He served on Presidential Commissions, national and state Task Forces, and he helped to create national policy and legislation to improve and expand mental health services and programs. Dr. Leopold attended Harvard University before serving in the U. S. Navy during World War II. After the war he resumed his studies at the University of Buffalo and graduated from the School of Medicine in 1951. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D. C. and served as a Captain in the U. S. Army Medical Corps while stationed in El Paso, Texas. After completing a residency in psychiatry, Dr. Leopold began his public career as a staff psychiatrist and later, as Director at Niagara County Mental Health Services. In 1964 he was appointed as the first Commissioner of Mental Health for the State of Vermont and developed the first statewide system of community based mental health services in the country. In 1972 Dr. Leopold was appointed to the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health and Hygiene in Baltimore, MD. In 1983 he returned to direct patient care serving in hospital settings with the V. A. In New York, Florida and Virginia.
