Abingdon woman kills herself after shooting her son's father

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A woman believed to have shot the father of her 2-year-old son yesterday morning took her life a few hours later as a police officer tried to stop her car in Havre de Grace, the Harford County Sheriff's Office reported.

Police said Tonya Massey, 39, of the 500 block of Eastview Terrace in Abingdon wounded Robert Binkley in the chest, face and arm. He was in fair condition yesterday at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Investigators believe that Binkley, 53, of Springfield, Va., had gone to Massey's apartment to pick up the boy about 8 a.m. when the two began arguing about custody, said Ginger Rigney, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.

Binkley was shot with a handgun as he sat in his sport utility vehicle, but was able to drive to nearby Tollgate Road, where a passer-by called 911. He was flown by helicopter to Bayview.

Rigney said, Massey dropped off her son unharmed, at her sister's home in Edgewood.

The sister followed Massey when she left, and called police to alert them. Massey was driving along Revolution Street in Havre de Grace when an officer spotted her car about 11 a.m., Rigney said.

The officer heard two shots as Massey pulled over. Rigney said Massey shot herself twice in the chest.
