IT IS TIME for the Linthicum Community Fair, when people come together to enjoy the outdoors while watching a parade, entertainment and demonstrations. Children can play games and adults enjoy crafts, and of course lots of food is offered.
The fair is Saturday and begins with a parade at 9:30 a.m. Marching bands, cheerleaders, Scout troops, about 15 floats and a few surprise entrants will assemble at Linthicum Middle School on Andover Road and proceed down Hammonds Ferry Road to the fairgrounds at Maple Road. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The rain date is Sept. 29.
The fair was started in 1990 to collect food and money for the North County Emergency Outreach Network (NCEON).
"We do this to bring the community together and do something nice for NCEON. There are a lot of people who depend on it," said Martin Muller, chairman of the event. Muller said that 3,023 nonperishable food items and about $2,800 were collected last year. This year's goal is to exceed that.
Nonprofit organizations will sell food at the fair, and 20 percent of those profits will go to NCEON.
Food donations will be collected at the fair. But before Saturday, food items may be taken to the Rose Restaurant at Camp Meade Road and Baltimore & Annapolis Boulevard or to the dental office of Dr. John Gigliotti, 809 N. Hammonds Ferry Road. Several other organizations are also collecting food, including Cub Scout troops, Girl Scout troops and the Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights.
Entertainment will be provided by local talent: the Friendship Squares square dancers; the St. John Lutheran Church choir and contemporary band; Phil Lathroum, who plays popular music; and students at the Susan Ina Dance Studio; and Al Bartlinski Karate Studio. Keith Mills and Dan Krimmelbein will be masters of ceremony for the day.
Entertainment geared toward children of various ages will include a rock wall, a rock and roll tumbler, a moon bounce, an air slide and an air maze. The Therapeutic Riders will offer pony rides.
Other activities will include pumpkin painting, face painting, scarecrow making and a silent auction.

World-class banjoist Skip DeVol and his combo will kick off the 2002-2003 concert season for the Performing Arts Association of Linthicum at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Chesapeake Center for the Creative Arts, 194 Hammonds Lane.
DeVol first encountered a banjo as a teen-ager while vacationing with his family in Colorado. He heard someone playing the instrument at another campsite and became enthralled. His interest developed into a passion.
DeVol practiced on his own and, without formal instruction or a background in stringed instruments, developed his own style of music. While a fine arts scholar at the University of Kansas, he played banjo as an extracurricular activity but soon found himself in demand and became a full-time professional.
This is the first of five concerts offered by arts association. The other scheduled performances are Sam Hagan and Kit Prothero, a classically trained vocal duo, at 8 p.m. Nov. 23; Stefan Scaggari, a jazz pianist, at 3 p.m. Feb. 16; Chorus of the Chesapeake, a barbershop group, at 8 p.m. Mar. 29; "Chevalier - Maurice and Me," a one-man show, at 8 p.m. May 3.
The association also sponsors a bonus concert, the U.S. Navy Band of Washington, at 1 p.m. Jan. 17. That concert is open to the public.
All concerts will be held at the arts center. Season subscriptions cost $34 and can be bought at the door.

"The Memoirs of A Las Vegas Showgirl" will be presented by Patricia Mountaintes at the opening program of the Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights' Career Women's group at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the clubhouse, 110 N. Hammonds Ferry Road. Besides her 10-year career as a Las Vegas showgirl, Mountaintes also was a professional dancer for many years.
There is no charge for the program. However, the club is collecting food items to benefit the North County Emergency Outreach Network. Items collected will be added to the contributions made by members at the club's opening tea Sept. 10, at which enough donations were collected to help 25 families.
Additional agenda items include the induction of new members, a presentation by committee chairwomen of planned programs, and a introduction to the fall fund-raisers.
Refreshments will be served after the program.

Flea market, car show
St. Philip Neri Church's annual fall flea market will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the school and church grounds, 6405 S. Orchard Road off Baltimore & Annapolis Boulevard.
An antique car and truck show - sponsored by Wayson's Citgo on Camp Meade Road in the Shipley-Linthicum Shopping Center - will be held at the same time to benefit Scout Venturing Crew 447. The first 75 registrants in the show will receive a dash plaque, and trophies will be awarded to the top category entrants. The registration fee for each car is $10.
Food, soft drinks and music will be available. The rain date is Oct. 12.

AARP to meet
Patapsco Valley Chapter 3850 of the AARP will hold its monthly meeting Wednesday at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 118 Marydell Road. A social hour with refreshments starts at noon, the program at 12:45 p.m. and the business meeting at 1:30 p.m. The program's speaker will be David Schofield, manager of ocean health in the conservation and rescue department of the National Aquarium.
