Commissioners plan meetings to hear residents' opinions
The Carroll County commissioners will hold a series of community meetings to listen to comments and concerns about issues that affect the area.
The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Uniontown Academy, 3345 Uniontown Road.
Tire Amnesty Day set at Northern Landfill
The Carroll County Department of Enterprise and Recreation Services, in conjunction with the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Maryland Environmental Service, is sponsoring a Tire Amnesty Day for Carroll County residents only.
Tire Amnesty Day will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Northern Landfill, 1400 Baltimore Blvd., Westminster. Proof of residency will be required.
Northern Landfill will accept up to 10 scrap tires per visit at no charge. Tires -- on or off the rim -- from passenger cars, light trucks and agricultural machines will be accepted.

Emphasis on child safety at two Wal-Mart stores
Two local business people are co-sponsoring Child Safety Awareness Days at Wal-Mart stores in Carroll County.
Events will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hampstead Wal-Mart and Oct. 19 at the Westminster store. Kerry Mitchell from Long & Foster Realtors and Bob Mitchell from Eagle Mortgage Services are coordinating the events.
Topics will include fingerprinting, fire safety, child safety seat information, accessing DNA, and the Amber Alert System. Police, fire and health department officials will be available to talk to parents and children.
The Maryland State Police, the Carroll County Sheriff's Department, the Hampstead and Westminster police departments and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will be represented at the events.

Program collects coats for distribution to needy
The Shepherd's Staff annual Call for Coats program begins Saturday and will continue through November.
The campaign works with Admiral Cleaners to provide clean coats for the needy during the cold winter months.
Coats of all sizes in good condition are needed. Collection points are at all Admiral Cleaners and in Westminster at the Shepherd's Staff, 30 Carroll St.; Westminster TownMall, center court; and Edward Jones, 56 W. Main St.
The Shepherd's Staff also will have a collection site at the Westminster Fallfest on Saturday.
Admiral Cleaners will clean and deliver all outerwear to the Shepherd's Staff for distribution to needy residents.
Individuals or families in need of outerwear can select coats from the Shepherd's Staff Clothing Shed at the Carroll Street location.
Coats will be available from late October through December, or while supplies last. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday; and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.
