Capital Gazette wins special Pulitzer Prize citation for coverage of newsroom shooting that killed five

Doris Mamie Matthews, 73, homemaker


Doris Mamie Ferguson Matthews, a homemaker and active church member, died of cancer Saturday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care in Towson. She was 73 and had lived for 45 years on East Cold Spring Lane.

Born in Baltimore, Doris Ferguson attended Dunbar High School and was married in 1947 to Warren Howard Matthews Sr., who died in 1988.

After memberships at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church and Wilson Park Christian Community Church, Mrs. Matthews became a founding charter member of New Faith Christian Community Church in 1989, and served on its Stewardess Board and Women's Circle and as a pastor's aide.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. today at New Faith, 4111 Hampton Place, preceded by family visitation at 6:30 p.m.

She is survived by a daughter, Betsy Matthews of Baltimore; a son, Steve Matthews of Baltimore; a brother, Donald Ferguson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
