The northbound lanes of Route 295 north of Interstate 695 were closed for about two hours early yesterday after a pickup truck driver was killed when he rear-ended a Greyhound bus, Maryland State Police said.
The 1993 Greyhound, carrying 11 passengers, had slowed to allow construction crews to stretch cable across the highway when Gerard Anthony Welzel, 39, of Clarksville, Del., failed to slow his 1991 Chevrolet S-10 pickup and crashed into the rear of the bus, said Lt. Michael Cain of the state police.
The accident, which occurred at 4 a.m., killed the driver instantly, police said. No one else was injured.
Cain said there was no indication Welzel had been speeding. The investigation is continuing.
Traffic was diverted from northbound 295 onto I-695 until about 6 a.m. while troopers investigated, Cain said.
