Toronto entered yesterday as the hottest team in the American League East, but had its six-game winning streak broken by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. On Aug. 23, the Orioles defeated the Blue Jays to move back to .500, and at that point, Toronto trailed the Orioles by 10 games. But when the Orioles went into their tailspin, the Blue Jays knocked them out of third place for the first time since April 27. Toronto is 34-29 since the All-Star break and the future looks bright with a lot of young players making big contributions. Josh Phelps (age 24) is batting .311 with 14 home runs and 55 RBIs, and he had accomplished those numbers in a mere 65 games. Rookie of the Year candidate Eric Hinske (25) is batting .286 with 23 home runs and 80 RBIs, switch-hitting second baseman Orlando Hudson (24) is batting .305, and outfielder Vernon Wells (23) is batting .272 with 20 home runs and 89 RBIs.
