Afghan government plans to destroy land mines

KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghanistan's government has pledged to destroy the stock-piles of land mines scattered across the country within four years, a United Nations spokesman said yesterday.

Afghan authorities have also committed to destroying the tens of thousands of active mines believed buried within the past 10 years, U.N. mission spokesman Manoel de Almeida e Silva told reporters in the capital, Kabul
