Commissioner candidate forum set for Thursday

The Carroll County Chapter of the Maryland Municipal League will hold a County Commissioner Candidate Forum at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Buttersburg Inn in Union Bridge.

The Democratic candidates and the Republican winners of the primary election will be invited to participate.

The MML chapter is sponsoring the forum to find out how the candidates plan to improve relations between the towns and the county.

The inn is on the first block of Main Street.

Commissioners plan hearings around county

The Carroll County commissioners will hold a series of community meetings around the county.

The purpose of the meetings is to hear comments and listen to citizen concerns on issues that affect the county.

The next meetings will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at Uniontown Academy, 3345 Uniontown Road; Oct. 29 at Lineboro fire hall, 4224 Main St.; Nov. 18 at the Carroll County Office Building, Room 003-004, at 225 N. Center St., Westminster.

Energy bill help available to low-income residents

Human Services Programs of Carroll County has received $36,501 for a program to help low-income residents with energy bills from the extended hot weather this summer.

Funding is from the Low Income Energy Assistance Program Contingency Fund and is available through next month or until the money is exhausted.

Through other programs, HSP staff has assisted 103 households with $29,000 in funds to prevent turn-off of or to restore utility service since July 1.

Bon Secours retreat for those with serious illness

Bon Secours Spiritual Center will hold a "Trust God" retreat day for individuals with serious illnesses from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Marriottsville Center.

This day of prayer will include guidance from presenters to those living with a serious illness or with someone who is very sick, facilitated sharing, individual and group prayer, quiet reflection time and rest.

A eucharistic liturgy will be held, with the sacrament of the sick for those who wish to receive it. Presenters will be Joan Fronc and Father Joseph Muth.

The cost is $40 and includes lunch. Reservations are required by Sept. 23.

Tire Amnesty Day planned Sept. 28 at landfill

The Carroll County Department of Enterprise and Recreation Services, in conjunction with the Maryland Department of the Environment and Maryland Environmental Services, is sponsoring a Tire Amnesty Day for Carroll County residents only.

Tire Amnesty Day will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at Northern Landfill, 1400 Baltimore Blvd., Westminster. Proof of residency will be required.

Northern Landfill will accept up to 10 scrap tires per visit at no charge. Passenger car, light truck and agricultural tires, on or off the rim, will be accepted.

Christian prayer breakfast to feature Frank Wright

Frank Wright, executive director of the D. James Kennedy Center for Christian Statesmanship, will be the featured speaker at the sixth annual Carroll County Christian Men's Prayer Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Oct. 5 at Wilhelm Ltd. Caterers.

A full buffet breakfast will be served, with the program afterward. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. Tickets are $10 and must be purchased by Sept. 24. Tickets are available at Trinity Books and Gifts, His Way Christian Book Store, or from event chairman Wesley Samosuk at 410-876-4716.

Tickets for pastors and students will be free. Blocks of tickets can be provided to churches or individuals on a consignment basis. Tickets cannot be guaranteed at the door. All men and boys are welcome to the event.

The program will include music by soloist Dasmond Olivier and time for prayer.

Wright is an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church and has a 21-year association with Kennedy and his ministries. The Center for Christian Statesmanship, said Wright, "is a spiritually based outreach to men and women in positions of influence and authority in our nation's government."

Participants are requested to park at Weis Food Store and take a shuttle bus to Wilhelm's on Route 140.

Target service group plans annual bull roast, picnic

Target Community and Educational Services will hold its 13th annual bull and oyster roast and family picnic from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Union Mills Homestead.

Tickets are $35 per person. Corporate tables are $1,000. Raffle tickets (50/50) are $100. Children younger than age 6 are admitted free. Proceeds go to Target services for the disabled.

Fire safety poster contest open to elementary pupils

The Carroll County Prevention & Life Safety Committee of the Carroll County Volunteer Firemen's Association is holding its annual poster contest for elementary school-age children.

The contest is open to all children in first through fifth grades, including special education students. Ribbons will be awarded to the top three winners in each grade, and a certificate to the grand-prize winner, also in each grade.

Posters should be 8 1/2 by 11 inches or 11 by 17 inches. Topics for each grade are: first, Don't Play With Matches; second, Stop, Drop and Roll; third, Smoke Alarms; fourth, Fire Extinguishers; fifth, Escape Plans.

Posters should be delivered or mailed to the Carroll County Emergency Services Training Center, 1345 Washington Road, Westminster 21157. Schools may contact their fire department poster coordinator before Oct. 10 to make arrangements to have posters picked up.

Winning posters will be displayed around the county and become the property of the CCVFA committee and will not be returned. An awards ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 7 at the Gamber fire hall.

Deadline for poster entries is 7 p.m. Oct. 15.
