A 9-year-old with talent, heart

The student: Elizabeth Nass, 9

School: Hollifield Station Elementary

Special achievement: She won a Ben Carson Scholars Fund Award, which recognizes young people who have excellent grades and contribute time to community service or charitable organizations. Teachers nominate students, who write three essays for their applications. The award is a $1,000 scholarship for college.

What her essays were about: "One was about my talents. I wrote about singing and horseback riding. I sing in an audition chorus at my school called the Station Singers. I like performing to audiences."

What makes her a humanitarian: "[Last] year at school, five of my friends and I organized a group called Nickels for New York" and collected $2,451.62 for the Red Cross 9/11 Fund. "I just thought it was really terrible how people lost their family members and people were in the hospital and didn't have enough money to pay."

Other interests: She also plays French horn, participates in Girl Scouts and plays lacrosse and basketball.
