Sewing made simple

How many times do you walk into a store and see some charming, homespun-looking item that you can't seem to live without. Maybe it's a skirt, a pillow or a simple bib. You check the price tag and then choke. For what it is, you think you could make it yourself.

In her new book, Sew Fast Sew Easy (Griffin Trade, $22.95), Elissa Meyrich shows you how. Meyrich covers the basics of sewing in 100 short, easy-to-read pages. She talks about everything from sewing on a button to understanding fabric personalities to getting over the fear of using a sewing machine. She even includes patterns for making a pillow, skirt and tote bag.

Meyrich, it seems, may be giving Martha a run for her money.

Making the grade, right from the top

Besides being forced to head off to school, there is probably only one thing that makes kids cringe more -- getting their hair washed.

Massato has taken the edge off shampoo time with the addition of two new products. Shampoo Kids ($22), a new melon-scented shampoo with natural kiwi extracts, softens hair and leaves it easy to comb through. Another perk: It does not sting eyes.

Gel Kids ($22) aids in controlling unruly cowlicks and curls without drying out children's delicate hair. Instead of melon, the fragrance here is bubble gum.

Cheeks defined

Is it possible to have cheeks like a European runway model even if you don't have the bones?

According to Joey New York, it is. The cosmetic company has created a stackable, three-piece kit called Chiseled Cheeks that contains two powder blushes and one cream blush.

Each color in the kit works separately to bring either "definition, glow or accent" to your cheeks.

This easy-to-use group of blushes comes with directions and a diagram to aid in figuring out your cheek structure. Chiseled Cheeks costs $35 and comes in different color-coordinated kits including neutral, soft pink, soft peach and wine / gold.
